Two years have passed since the community of Cornelius last caught a glimpse of Madalina Cojocari, the then 11-year-old girl whose disappearance has left a lingering question mark over the town. On Nov. 21, 2022, the young girl was seen exiting her school bus, a moment captured on video and marked as the last time anyone reported seeing her in public, as per WCNC Charlotte. Despite the growing case file and the troubling facts, no decisive leads have emerged on her whereabouts.
Following her disappearance, it wasn't until school officials raised alarm over her prolonged absence that her parents reported her missing, which culminated in the arrest of both Diana Cojocari and Christopher Palmiter for failing to report a missing child. A detail captured by QC News, was that Palmiter has since sought divorce, further muddying the waters of their shared narrative. Both parents have served time in jail, with Diana Cojocari pleading guilty and completing 17 months of incarceration, and Palmiter being found guilty and sentenced to time served.
The curious case took a turn when Diana Cojocari, who was once a Moldovan national before her life entwined with the American justice system, reportedly left the United States. Investigators have labeled her a suspect, as relayed by WBTV, but the details of her departure remain a closely guarded secret, punctuated by a lack of specificity on her destination. As law enforcement navigates this jigsaw puzzle, a former FBI agent M. Quentin Williams commented on the extra layer of complexity her leaving adds to the investigation.
Meanwhile, the town of Cornelius holds onto a collective resolve that has been previously captured by the words of one resident who, according to a WCNC Charlotte interview, expressed that "We just want to find the little girl and have justice." A sentiment echoed broadly across the community. A reward of $25,000 is still on offer for information leading to Madalina's whereabouts.
