A Ukrainian national, Oleksandr Yurchyk, entered a guilty plea to charges including conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to commit money laundering. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, court records reveal that Yurchyk and co-conspirators operated a series of labor-staffing businesses in Southern Florida from April 2008 to July 2021, which provided work to undocumented immigrants in the hospitality sector. They also conspired to evade federal income and employment taxes.
The verdict is part of a broader inquiry by Homeland Security Investigations and the IRS Criminal Investigation into fraudulent financial activities. In Southern Florida, Yurchyk's network of companies, which included Paradise Choice LLC, Paradise Choice Cleaning LLC, Tropical City Services LLC, and Tropical City Group LLC, laundered upwards of $11 million from their illicit operations, authorities said. The prosecution team, comprised of Senior Litigation Counsel Christopher J. Clark of the Southern District of Florida and Justice Department’s Tax Division Trial Attorneys Sean Beaty, Matthew B. Hicks, and Wilson R. Stamm, are tasked with bringing the case to a close.
Yurchyk faces a potential maximum sentence of 20 years for the money laundering charge and an additional five years for the charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States. The official sentencing is set for January 27, 2025, with a federal district court judge considering various statutory factors and U.S. Sentencing Guidelines to determine the final sentence. The sentencing will cap off an extensive period of criminal activity spanning over a decade.
The guilty plea marks a significant development in the government's efforts to clamp down on tax fraud and money laundering schemes, U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida highlighted the collaborative effort of the investigation. Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division was also cited as giving credence to the team's announcement, following the legal proceedings closely.
