The Rainbow Warriors of the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team couldn't sustain their bright start to the season, faltering against the prowess of No. 10 North Carolina in an 87-69 setback on their home turf at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. According to the report by KHON2, a crowd of 8,377 witnessed the home team's shooting turn icy in the first half, managing only 12-for-33 from the field and a dismal 2-for-14 from 3-point land. Hawaii's relative freeze allowed the visiting Tar Heels to improve their record to 3-1, leaving the Warriors at a still-respectable 4-1.
In a telling stat that didn't exactly reflect the final score, Hawaii came away with the edge on the boards, out-rebounding North Carolina 40-27. Despite this, the Tar Heels managed to decisively exploit the paint, scoring 44 of their points in that high-percentage area, according to details shared by University of Hawai'i Athletics. Gytis Nemeiksa and Tanner Christensen each notched double-doubles, with Nemeiksa's 16 points leading the team, but it wasn't enough to keep to hold back the surge from North Carolina.
As reported by KHON2, North Carolina's Elliot Cadeau and RJ Davis combined to drop 35 points, with Davis shooting his way to 18 points. The visitors' firepower and ability to drive to the hoop had them drawing fouls and utilize the charity stripe, hitting 26 out of 34 free throws. This offensive efficiency was a stark contrast to the struggles that Hawaii experienced, especially early in the game.
Despite a tough start where the Rainbow Warriors missed 10 of their first 11 shots, they managed to momentarily claw back into the game. Akira Jacobs proved pivotal with 10 points in the first nine minutes, offering a glimmer of hope that perhaps this game could go their way. However, the Tar Heels were quick to decisively stamp out any momentum Hawaii hoped to build with a prodigious 17-3 run in the second half, as they never looked back after taking a 58-39 lead, the University of Hawai'i Athletics recap highlighted.
Looking ahead, the Rainbow Warriors will get minimal time to lick their wounds as they prepare to host Hawaii Pacific on Tuesday. As for the victors from North Carolina, their island stay extends as they move on to compete in the upcoming Maui Invitational.
