In the aftermath of the devastating bomb cyclone that brought hurricane-like winds and destruction to western Washington, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has been hard at work attempting to restore power to tens of thousands of residents. According to KOMO News, extensive damage to PSE's infrastructure forced the utility company to push back its initial power restoration estimates, prolonging uncertainty and darkness for those affected beyond the initially anticipated Saturday noon.
Despite their assurances, as of Saturday evening, PSE reported that approximately 58,000 customers remained without power, leaving many to confront the prospect of finishing the weekend without the modern conveniences electricity supports. Crews, discovered further complications with the electrical grid that were initially hidden by the turmoil of the storm, particularly in areas such as the Eastside and the southern end of Lake Sammamish, as KOMO News reported.
With the damaged infrastructure taking precedence, PSE is aiming to return life to some semblance of normality by restoring power to schools and moving through neighborhoods sequentially to mend distribution-level outages. Over 150 line crews are currently dedicated to these tasks, complemented by 70 tree crews working to clear dangerous debris, as detailed by FOX 13 Seattle.
In the meantime, those experiencing outages are seeking refuge and respite where possible. PSE had set up a Community Response Trailer in Maple Valley, offering a place for residents to charge devices and gather information, with Melanie Coon, a PSE spokesperson, acknowledging to FOX 13 Seattle the frustration felt during this extended period without power.
Amid concerns over the restoration delays, PSE sought to reassure customers, being quoted on KIRO 7 as saying, "We are working as hard as we can to get power restored to you sooner than the times listed above. As our field crews gain more detailed information about your outage, we will update the outage map with a more specific time." The PSE also reminded customers to prepare for the possibility of a second windstorm and to stay informed through their outage map and community updates.
