The City of Westerville's leaf collection service implements a schedule tailored to keep streets clean and storm sewers clear. Residents have a role to play in this annual dance with nature, and that role is simple: rake your leaves to the tree lawn area and keep them out of the streets.
The process is as much about safety as it is about sanitation. Leaves left on the street can lead to clogged drains, waterlogged byways, and perilously slippery conditions for unsuspecting motorists and cyclists alike. The Service Department emphasizes that vehicles should park with at least a three-foot buffer from the leaf piles to ensure collection crews can efficiently do their task.
The initiative, which runs from October 7 through December 27, zones the city into three parts to streamline the operation. Zone 1 kicks off first, and by December, all zones should have seen the leaf collection trucks at least once. In line with best practices, Westerville authorities ask that leaves be free from large sticks, twigs, and rubbish that could damage equipment or injure personnel. Obstructions like basketball hoops should also be cleared from the curbside to avoid disrupting the service. Apart from the special leaf collection weeks, yard waste will continue to be picked up every Monday as part of the city’s ongoing service, and leaves can alternatively be bagged for these regular pickups.
