A 32-year-old woman tragically lost her life after making the fatal decision to jump from a moving rideshare vehicle on the Long Island Expressway in Queens, an act leading to her being struck by at least one other car, say police officials. The incident occurred early Saturday at around 1:30 a.m. near the Kissena Boulevard overpass.
Police identified the victim as Priyanka Sewhani, who was in the backseat of an Uber when she suddenly opened the door and jumped onto the busy expressway. It's unclear how many other vehicles were involved or why she jumped, but the Uber driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with authorities investigating her death, as reported by ABC 7 New York.
According to NBC New York, the police investigation into the cause of Sewhani's leap is ongoing, and at present, it has been confirmed that no other passengers were in the car except for Sewhani and the driver at the time of the ordeal; the driver of the vehicle that struck her did not remain on-site.
The death caused several lanes on the expressway to be closed for hours, creating traffic delays for morning commuters. Police have limited information, but the Uber driver's cooperation could be key to understanding what happened.
