A tragic event occurred early this morning on City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, where a woman using a wheelchair was fatally struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident, police said. According to 6abc, the collision happened around 2:15 a.m. near the intersection with Conshohocken State Road as the woman was leaving a Taco Bell; following the incident, a folded wheelchair was left abandoned on the road.
Local authorities are on the hunt for a dark blue SUV, which was last seen traveling south on City Avenue, with this part of the thoroughfare closed off for investigation and police urging witnesses to come forward, especially surrounding the critical 2 a.m. timeframe when officers responded to the devastating scene as reported by FOX 29. The identity of the woman, believed to be in her 50s, has not been disclosed but she was reportedly known to the local police.
After the crash, City Avenue remained shuttered for several hours into the morning while the Lower Merion Township police conducted their investigations "A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene," Police Lt. Justin Judge told NBC Philadelphia, and although the role of the damaged wheelchair in relation to the crash has not been fully clarified city officials are pressing any potential witnesses to step forward and offer information by calling 610-649-1000.
