An incident unfolded in the Channelview area of east Harris County, where a toddler was struck by a vehicle and killed, as confirmed by the Harris County Sheriff's Office dispatch. KHOU report details that the accident occurred on Woodrow Street near Elsbeth Road.

The victim, a 2-year-old child, was swiftly transported to the hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead upon arrival, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez disclosed the toddler's age and the dire circumstances surrounding the transport. An update from Sheriff Gonzalez, which was noted in a statement obtained by ABC13, revealed a twist as the vehicle initially at the scene was wrongfully identified as the one involved, it turns out that the actual vehicle implicated in the hit-and-run incident had fled.

Officials have indicated that there should have been an adult supervising the child inside a nearby home at the time of the accident. Their relationship to the child, however, remains unclear, meanwhile, a Good Samaritan not involved in the accident did stop to render aid to the victim.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is actively searching for the hit-and-run driver. According to Eric Albers with the Sheriff's Office Vehicular Crimes Division, the victim's father discovered his child injured and sought help from a neighbor. With all vehicles from the surrounding homes accounted for, authorities believe the perpetrator fled the scene after the accident. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the sheriff's office at 713-221-6000.
