Shoppers at Summit Mall were met with a chaotic scene yesterday when fights involving juveniles led to an early shutdown of the mall and 20 arrests. The Summit County Sheriff's Office reported that the altercations spread inside and out into the parking lot, culminating in the mall's closure around 5:30 p.m., as per cleveland.com. The incidents required the response of multiple police departments to help restore order.
Despite rumors that circulated online about gunfire and active shooters, Fairlawn Police confirmed that these claims were unfounded. "Aside from general disorder and altercations among the juveniles, there were no significant incidents, such as claims of gunfire, active shooters, or other violent acts being shared online," the department posted on Facebook. FOX8 News noted this misinformation in their coverage of the event.
The charges against the juveniles include trespassing, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and assault on a peace officer, the latter of which is a felony. According to Cleveland19, several deputies were assaulted during the arrests, and one required treatment by the Fairlawn Fire Department due to an injury near his eye.
This is not the first occurrence of such turmoil at the mall during the holiday season. Summit Mall has seen similar episodes, notably on the same day, the day after Christmas, which is recognized as Boxing Day in some cultures. "This situation has become a recurring issue that we have been anticipating and preparing for," Fairlawn police said in a statement, signaling that authorities are no strangers to these challenges. A statement that echoes previous incidents reported by both Cleveland19 and FOX8 News.
The community response included confusion and dismay, with local resident Vijay Shah expressing surprise and concern. "This is like festive season and people want to enjoy it," Shah told Cleveland19. "Hearing this is a real shock, and you wonder why violence is increasing among teenagers." Meanwhile, Summit Mall's management has yet to comment on the situation.
