A 76-year-old Burton woman lost her life in a multi-car collision on Interstate 75 this past weekend. The incident, which involved three vehicles, occurred in Saginaw County, and it prompted authorities to shut down the freeway for several hours during the investigation, as reported by The Detroit News.
Michigan State Police were called to the crash site north of Birch Run Road at approximately 10:20 p.m. Sunday. A preliminary investigation revealed that two cars collided initially, leaving one vehicle disabled in the travel lanes. Then, after the initial accident, a third vehicle struck the disabled car. As indicated by reports from FOX 2 Detroit, the elderly woman was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the secondary collision.
Emergency response teams transported several people to hospitals for treatment following the incident. Specific details regarding the extent of their injuries have not been disclosed. However, an investigation into the cause of the crash is actively ongoing. The Michigan State Police has expressed that as of last Tuesday, fatalities on state roadways have plateaued in comparison to last year, with a slight decrease in the number of serious injuries, as per a statement obtained by The Detroit News.
The northbound lanes of I-75 were closed for about three hours, but all lanes reopened by Monday morning. More details about the investigation are expected as state police continue their work.
