Pohoiki Bay, which was swamped by volcanic debris, is slated to undergo a pivotal transformation. A $9.2 million dredging project is set to start in early 2025, aiming to clear up the boat ramp that has been out of commission for over six years.
According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the task, awarded to Goodfellow Bros. as the lowest bidder, is about reconnecting communities to the ocean that has long been part of their way of life. "The dredging involves removal of accumulated lava debris to restore a wide entrance channel for the existing boat ramp," said DOBOR engineer Finn McCall. This will save locals from having to make the hour-long trip to Wailoa Small Boat Harbor in Hilo for their maritime activities.
DOBOR is working to secure all necessary permits quickly, with plans to break ground in February 2025. The project is expected to be completed by November, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
