A nine-year-old girl in Lorain County, Ohio, has been charged with inducing panic after authorities linked her to bomb threats made against two schools in the district. The threats resulted in the closure of Clearview High School and Durling Middle School. According to a report by Cleveland.com, the fake Facebook account from which the threats were made was traced back to the young girl, a third-grader at Vincent Elementary School.
The incident occurred last Thursday morning, prompting an urgent response from the FBI and the Lorain County Sheriff's Office. Despite the alarming nature of the threat, the investigation revealed that it was not credible. As per A WHIO report, the girl admitted to making the threat and another one in September. The child's case has been referred to the Lorain County Juvenile Court.
Community reactions were a mix of shock and concern, particularly around young children accessing social media platforms. "Seeing these kids and having kids in this school nowadays is, it’s not what you want to hear especially someone that young to have access to that social media," Jacob Kyle, a 7th-grade coach at Durling Middle School, told Cleveland 19. Another parent, whose identity was not disclosed, expressed the sentiment that greater parental involvement is needed regarding children's social media activities.
The gravity of the situation resonates with the fact that this is reportedly the second time the child has been involved in such threats. While Sheriff’s deputies have charged the girl, her parents were not charged in the incident. The Clearview Local Schools Superintendent, Jerome Davis, referred the third grader to the Assessment Center by a magistrate, emphasizing the district's continuing concern for the safety and well-being of students. Davis communicated this information following inquiries from Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.
