The Alexandria City Council has been buzzing with new developments as the city gears up for an eventful 2025. The Council's latest Monday meeting last Monday saw a range of approvals and introductions, including the green light for the Viking Speedway racing season and welcoming new members to its ranks.
According to the Echo Press, the Council issued a motorized vehicle racing license and locked in 18 dates for racing and other events for the coming year. In a nod to safety and organization, race vehicles will be contained to the south side of the fence on city property, and larger events may spread into the neighboring Fair Board property for pit areas.
The swearing-in of new members added fresh air to the Council chambers as Mayor Bobbie Osterberg, along with Ward 3's Scott Allen and Ward 5's Carl Kvale, took their oaths of office. The Voice of Alexandria reported on this changeover in local government, marking a new chapter for Alexandria's leadership.
Beyond the roar of speeding engines, the Council addressed the city's social amenities with increased park shelter reservation fees, drawing an estimated $3,000 in additional revenue, a notable rise from the low fees that have been unchanged since 2020. This move mirrors trends in nearby municipalities where reservation fees claim a higher price for enjoying public spaces.
As 2024 comes to a close, the Council also waved goodbye to outgoing Ward 5 council member Andrew Wiener, who opted not to seek re-election. "I'm honored to have served the city in Ward 5," Wiener expressed in a statement obtained by Echo Press. His departure ushers in Carl Kvale, a real estate broker, who along with the rest of the Council, faces the challenge of guiding Alexandria through another year of growth and change.
