Allegheny County residents wondering what to do with their Christmas trees after the holidays can participate in the county's annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program, set to begin the day after Christmas. According to Allegheny County, from December 26 through January 19, 2025, residents can drop off their trees at various county park locations from 8 am until dusk. With over 3,000 trees given a second life in the previous year, the program encourages sustainability and responsible disposal of holiday trees.
Before donating their trees to the parks' nourishment, participants must strip them of all decorations, including lights, tinsel, and stands. Mulched on-site, the trees will contribute to the well-being of the parks' ecosystem. This yearly program provides a green solution to the post-Christmas issue, glinting with strands of tinsel and discarded comfort that tend to line the curbs of our neighborhoods, giving new life to these symbols of the season once they have served their primary purpose.
The recycling initiative has been designed to be convenient for county residents, and nine parks accept trees. Drop-off points include popular areas such as the Soccer Fields Parking Lot at Boyce Park, the Veterans Shelter Parking Lot at Deer Lakes Park, and the Middle Road Parking Lot at Hartwood Acres Park. A full list of locations is accessible online for those interested in participating.
