An officer-involved shooting took place yesterday afternoon near South Grand Boulevard and Chouteau Avenue in St. Louis, leaving an armed suspect hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and three others in custody. According to KSDK, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a string of car break-ins in Midtown when the incident occurred.
Police were initially tipped about car break-ins at a QuikTrip station, but the situation escalated as the officers got redirected to Topgolf, where suspects in a stolen Audi Q7 were spotted eyeing vehicles. The confrontation peaked near a Target store where police laid spike strips to thwart a potential high-speed escape. Maj. Janice Bockstruck informed that an suspect car hit a spike strip and rammed into the median on Grand Boulevard after striking another vehicle. All four suspects then attempted to flee on foot. In statements obtained by Fox 2 Now, SLMPD reported the stolen vehicle was connected to car break-ins across the area.
During the ensuing foot chase, policemen confronted one of the suspects, a 25-year-old man, who was armed with a gun. Despite commands to drop his weapon, the confrontation led to two officers discharging their weapons, subsequently injuring the suspect in the hip. "When the vehicle left the lot it was spiked," Bockstruck said. "It then struck another vehicle. Still attempting to flee, even though it was spiked. It then hit the median in the middle of Grand Boulevard and became disabled," she highlighted in an interview with KSDK.
The 25-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital, and his weapon was recovered at the scene. Three other suspects, aged 18, 22, and 23, were arrested nearby without further incidents. Additional firearms and suspected narcotics were found in the Audi, which was reported stolen from High Ridge, MO, earlier in the month. According to a First Alert 4 report, no officers were injured during the event.
Ncenga Sibongn, a local resident, nearly encountered the chaos as he disembarked the MetroLink. "I'd seen a crashed car on my way down here. When someone just yelled to ask what happened, the response was 'something big,'" Sibongn told KSDK. The incident caused temporary disruptions in the area, but roads were reopened later that evening.
