Big moves are happening within Middletown's City Council as they've decided to promote Ashley Combs to the role of Acting City Manager, beginning with the new year. The announcement is a testament to Combs's steady climb through the ranks within the city government. Having started her tenure as the City’s Planner nine years ago, Combs has been recognized for her commitment and expertise by being appointed as one of the City’s two Assistant City Managers in August 2023.
Combs's tenure and performance have made an impression on city officials, including Vice Mayor Steve West. "Ashley is a great asset to the City and has served the City and its residents well over the last nine years in various leadership roles," Vice Mayor West said in a City of Middletown press release. West also expressed eager anticipation to see Combs showcase her skills in this elevated position, having already led the City’s Development Services department with acclaim.
The shift will see Nathan Cahall, the current Acting City Manager, reverting to his previous position as Assistant City Manager after his interim term in August. However, the council sees this strategic game of musical chairs as an opportunity for fair play, giving both assistant city managers a chance to helm the city briefly. "Because we are unique in Butler and Warren counties as having two assistant city managers, some members of City Council simply wanted to give Ashley an equal chance to serve as Acting City Manager prior to making a decision on the full-time City Manager position," West explained via the City of Middletown. This decision underscores a collaborative spirit within Middletown’s seat of power, signaling a united front in continuing the city’s trajectory of progress.
While this may seem merely a change of guard, it represents a commitment to equitable leadership opportunities within Middletown's governance. Residents are looking forward, with a vested interest, to seeing how Combs will further contribute to the ongoing efforts to "make Middletown great again," as Cahall is also expected to continue supporting key City initiatives, according to the City of Middletown. The dynamic between Combs and Cahall seems set to maintain momentum in Middletown’s developmental agenda even as they switch roles at the turn of the year.
