The Atlanta film community is mourning the loss of Steve Mensch, the president and general manager of Tyler Perry Studios, who died in a tragic plane crash on Friday night. Mensch, who was also the pilot of the small aircraft, was flying a single-engine Vans RV-12iS when it crashed in Homosassa, Florida, as first reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. A statement from the studio expressed the profound sense of loss felt by Perry and the studio’s extended family over Mensch's untimely death. They shared, "We are incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend Steve Mensch," and added, "It’s hard to imagine not seeing him smiling throughout the halls. We will miss him dearly. Our heart goes out to his family as we all send them our prayers."
The crash occurred near the intersection of U.S. 98 and West White Dogwood Drive, according to details provided by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Photos from the scene depict the plane having landed upside down on a road, a grave scene that yields to the tragic reality of Mensch’s solo flight ending abruptly in loss.
In a poignant tribute shared to Instagram, Tyler Perry himself spoke to the character and contributions of Mensch at the studio. "Steve Mensch was truly a kind soul and a great leader at the studio. We all adored him and are devastated that he’s gone. I’m praying for his family as we all try to make sense of this heartbreak," Perry shared on his personal Instagram account. Gannon Murphy, general manager of Atlanta’s Cinelease Studios, also remembered Mensch, as told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "He often spoke with so much love for his family. My thoughts are with them during this tough time. Steve will be truly missed."
Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have undertaken the investigation into the crash, as the community begins the process of grappling with the reality that Mensch, 62, will no longer helm Tyler Perry Studios—a place where he not only managed operations but embedded his spirit into the fabric of the collective ethos.
