As the temperatures in Atlanta plunge, the city is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and warmth of its residents by opening two warming centers. According to a news release from the City of Atlanta, the centers will be available to the public beginning Monday, December 2, 2024, from 8:00 p.m. to Tuesday, December 3 at 6:00 a.m., and then again from Tuesday, December 3 at 8:00 p.m. to Wednesday, December 4 at 6:00 a.m.
The designated facilities ready to provide refuge from the cold are the Central Park Recreation Center located at 400 Merritts Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30308 and the Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Ln NW, Atlanta, GA 30331, ensuring the coverage extends across different parts of the city. Those in need of transportation to these centers can find it available courtesy of Fulton County from the Gateway Center, with service beginning at 8:00 p.m. Nightly return transportation upon deactivation of the centers will be provided, which adds a layer of accessibility for those who may otherwise find it difficult to reach these warm havens on their own.
It's crucial to note that the opening of these warming centers is not a static schedule but rather one that's responsive to the ongoing assessment of weather conditions; activation times may adjust depending on updates from the National Weather Service. The city's efforts underline a commitment to public safety and responsiveness to environmental contingencies that could affect its citizens.
For those tracking the potential for prolonged services or changes in operational hours, it's recommended to stay informed through the city's communications or direct updates from the National Weather Service. This adaptability ensures that the warming centers can provide the necessary assistance as the winter weather dictates, and it reflects a dynamic approach to city management where the well-being of the community remains a priority.
