Atlanta's fight against climate change just got a multi-million-dollar boost, with the Environmental Protection Agency allocating over $3 million to the city for its Clean Heavy Duty Vehicle Grant, as part of the program EcoFleet ATL. Mayor Andre Dickens expressed commitment to the city's green transition, with aims of hitting 100% clean energy by 2035. EcoFleet ATL, he says, will move the city closer to its climate goals, expand EV capabilities, and foster equity in environmental justice, especially by ensuring EV chargers are installed in historically underserved areas.

"The City of Atlanta has long understood that the nation’s climate crisis is one of the most urgent and significant challenges we face. We already have milestones in place that have us transitioning to 100% clean energy by 2035, and EcoFleet ATL will not only bring us closer to our climate goals but also support expanding EV capabilities—especially in our EV fleet," Mayor Andre Dickens told the City of Atlanta’s official website. He noted that the program aligns with both economic, and climate equity pivotal in constructing a city ready for the future.

As part of the overhaul, Atlanta's municipal fleet will see 11 diesel vehicles replaced by electric versions. The switch includes a variety of duty trucks and a street sweeper, with each replacement aimed at curbing carbon emissions. In addition to the greener vehicles, the grant will be used to establish an array of fast-charging stations across several city-owned sites, promoting more sustainable energy use for the city's transit systems.

The initiative isn't stopping at new vehicles and charging stations—the grant also contributes to education with training programs for city fleet mechanics, and operators. This way, staff are to be skilled in maintaining and operating both the electric vehicles, and the charging infrastructure. According to the City of Atlanta’s announcement, these funds are essential in ensuring the longevity and efficiency of the new, greener fleet.
