In a unanimous move by the Aurora City Council earlier this week, Amsalu Kassaw was appointed as the new At-large Council Member, taking over the position previously held by Dustin Zvonek. Aurora residents are looking at a fresh face in city leadership, one that has been recognized for his contribution to the community as a stand-out volunteer.
According to the City of Aurora, Kassaw, who is currently working a gig at Geo Group, Inc., has a résumé that positions him as not just a worker among the corporate hierarchy but also as an engaged agent of change within the Aurora community. With accolades like the 2024 Aurora Community Spirit Award and the 2023 Leadership Service Unifying Achievement Award to decorate his entry into public office, Kassaw comes into the role with a background steeped in service and an eye toward international relations. According to his application, he's keen on using this position to better address and resolve the issues concerning the residents of Aurora.
Amidst the shake-up, the council also went ahead and appointed Steve Sundberg as mayor pro tem for 2025. His advancement in the ranks as Ward II City Council Member to now being the mayor-in-waiting is a shift that speaks to the dynamism of local government and the ever-turning wheel of civic responsibility. These changes rolled out during Monday's regular council meeting, mark a notable pivot as the city of Aurora heads into the new year.
Kassaw is slated to be sworn in on January 13 during the regularly scheduled council meeting, effectively filling the seat until its term concludes at the first council meeting in December 2025. However, the Aurora electorate won't have long before they are tasked with selecting a new At-large Council Member in the November 2025 Regular Municipal Election, an occasion that will either reaffirm Kassaw's stewardship or turn the page once more. As for Sundberg, his new role as mayor pro tem comes with its own set of expectations and responsibilities as the city navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
