Another tragic occurrence has happened on the roads of Austin, as a fatal collision claimed the life of a young motorcyclist. The City of Austin reported that on Tuesday, December 17, Draven Rains Avila was involved in a crash at around 7:09 p.m. The accident occurred at the intersection of West Parmer Lane and Ganymede Drive.
First responders quickly arrived at the scene to find that Avila, a Hispanic male born on April 29, 1999, had sustained fatal injuries. Despite prompt attention, Avila was pronounced dead at the scene. The involved parties were noted to have remained to engage fully with the investigation, which was confirmed by the Austin Police Department to not involve impairment as a contributing factor. Still, this incident pushes Austin's fatal traffic count alarmingly higher than the previous year's.
The impact of Avila's passing was felt by the community, with condolences and memories being shared across social networks. While law enforcement continues to piece together the circumstances that led to the collision, the investigation remains active and pending further developments.
The Austin Police Department has classified this incident as the city's 91st fatal crash of the year, which has led to a total of 97 fatalities. This marks an increase from the same date in 2023, where 88 fatal crashes resulted in 91 fatalities. The APD has called for witnesses with any relevant information to come forward and to possibly contribute to more accurately complete the police's reconstruction of the event. Anyone with information has been encouraged to contact the APD’s Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111 or report anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
The police have yet to determine if charges will be filed in connection to the crash, and the full report will be made available upon conclusion of the forensic analysis and testimonial collection.
