A tragedy has struck the Austin community following a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian. According to a statement from the Austin Police Department, the accident occurred on Wednesday, September 25, at approximately 9:32 p.m. The incident took place in the 4600 block of E. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., where a pedestrian was hit by a white SUV, then by another unknown vehicle that fled the scene.
Responding officers found the pedestrian, identified as Kameron Hartman, a Black male born on August 16, 1996, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. While the driver of the white SUV stayed and is cooperating with authorities, detectives are actively seeking the second vehicle involved, described as a dark-colored 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, as detailed by the Austin Police Department. With the public's assistance being crucial, anyone with information on this vehicle has been urged to reach out to the APD's Vehicular Homicide unit.
The aftermath leaves Austin grappling with its 66th fatal crash of the year, culminating in 71 fatalities—a number closely trailing last year's statistics around the same date which stood at 67 fatal crashes and 70 fatalities, as per the APD. These numbers, while stark, are part of an ongoing assessment that may be subject to change as the investigation continues.
APD has made an appeal for anyone with information to come forward and has provided multiple avenues to do so. Witnesses or those with knowledge pertinent to the crash can contact the APD unit or leave an anonymous tip through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
