In November, Austin Police Department records displayed a distressing rise in the city's reported rape cases, totalling 54 incidents, which marks the highest count in recent years. This information, disclosed within the department's chief's monthly report and shared by CBS Austin, points to a possible return to the pre-pandemic levels of reported sexual assault incidents, possibly amplified by the city's significant population growth and evolving conversations about sexual assault reporting.

Support for victims in Austin comes from organizations such as the SAFE Alliance, where advocacy program manager Katie Grimmer addressed that victims who choose to share their experiences are courageous. "We always say people are so brave just for sharing their story with us," Grimmer told MSN. As an avenue for confidential support, SAFE Alliance stands ready to connect victims with resources necessary to begin a healing process.

The increase in cases has not only been seen by Austin Police but also the SAFE Alliance, which traditionally observes a decrease in cases after mid-October. However, this year continues to be an anomaly. Grimmer noted in a statement obtained by CBS Austin, "We've still stayed very steady at SAFE as well." According to the same source, the last time the organization saw a similar number of cases was before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data corroborates a steady climb in sexual assault reports throughout the year. CBS Austin reached out to the Austin Police Department in an attempt to rapidly gain insight on these statistics, but were told the Sex Crimes Unit would not be available to comment until the following week. Districts 1, 4, and 9 are particular areas of concern, with reported cases of rape reaching 54, 56, and 50 respectively. Efforts to obtain comments from the respective city council members of these districts were also met with either no availability or outright declines.

Despite the daunting numbers, there is an observed shift in the city's approach to handling sexual assault cases, fostered by systemic changes stemming from a lawsuit which was a response to the mishandling of rape cases by the A.P.D. "I feel like we're shifting hopefully for the positive, and in a direction where we talk more about consent as a community," Grimmer expressed to CBS Austin. Positive outcomes have been marked by the doubling of convictions this year by the Travis County district attorney's office, which has handled a greater number of sexual assault trials than in the past eight years combined.

However, Katie Grimmer highlights that progress is an unending pursuit. The SHIFT in community response to disclosures of sexual assault remains an area where growth is continuously sought and demanded. For those in need, SAFE Alliance extends its availability through a confidential, 24/7 hotline for calls at 512-267-7233 or texts at 737-888-7233, providing a steadfast resource in the face of this mounting challenge.
