A 1-month-old baby boy was found abandoned on a busy Colorado roadway on Christmas Day, leading to a disturbing discovery, the infant tested positive for cocaine, according to an affidavit. The Denver Gazette reports that the baby was located just north of the Highway 36 junction, clad only in a diaper amid the winter chill.
Following the welfare check, the Adams County Sheriff's Office disclosed the baby's condition, with Sergeant Adam Sherman expressing the gravity of the situation. "No child should be put in that predicament," wearing little to protect him from the elements, said Sherman, as obtained by Denver7. He added, "Especially (a) one-month-old baby, unclothed, who, you know, at that point in their life, they're solely dependent on others around them. And knowing that... a baby was just left in the middle of the street is, is devastating."
The child's parents were arrested Wednesday afternoon following the infant's discovery. The baby was fortunately found by a Good Samaritan, as reported by Denver7, before being taken under the care of local authorities.
In light of the incident and wider issues of child safety, Castillo from the Department of Human Services emphasized the public's role in safeguarding children's well-being. "We believe very strongly that every young person deserves a life where they can feel safe and loved and cared for," Castillo said, urging that concerns about a child's safety should prompt a call to authorities. According to 9News, Castillo noted, that DHS may need to intervene, but often they're able to offer families resources and help to keep kids in the home safely, concerned about the safety of a child.
