President Joe Biden has announced an increase in security assistance to Ukraine, totaling nearly $2.5 billion, as Ukraine continues to face Russian aggression. Biden emphasized that supporting Ukraine is a key priority for his administration, aiming for Ukraine's victory in the conflict. The assistance package includes a $1.25 billion drawdown and a $1.22 billion Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) package. These funds will enhance Ukraine's battlefield capabilities and provide long-term support with weapons such as air defense and artillery.
According to the announcement from the White House website, the package will fully utilize all remaining USAI funds appropriated by Congress earlier this year. President Biden has also directed his administration to expedite assistance, including the drawdown of older U.S. equipment for Ukraine and revitalizing the U.S. defense industrial base. This will help modernize and replenish America’s arsenals with updated weapons.
"The Department of Defense is in the process of delivering hundreds of thousands of artillery rounds, thousands of rockets, and hundreds of armored vehicles which will strengthen Ukraine’s hand as it heads into the winter," Biden said in the announcement.
Biden concluded by reaffirming his commitment to continue supporting Ukraine throughout his time in office, stating his determination to strengthen Ukraine's position in the war. The U.S. assistance is crucial in helping Ukraine defend its sovereignty and counter the ongoing Russian offensive.
