From December 16 through last Sunday, law enforcement on Hawaii's Big Island took action to combat impaired driving, resulting in the arrest of 19 individuals for driving under the influence (DUI). These recent incidents contribute to a troubling escalation in DUI arrests on the island, with a total of 942 arrests this year, marking an increase of 1.3 percent compared with last year's 930 arrests during the same period. The repercussions of impaired driving extend beyond arrests, as the police department's Traffic Services Section noted an alarming 16 percent increase in major crashes this year, scaling from 830 to 963.
Hawaii's Big Island has witnessed a troubling surge in fatal traffic accidents, with 25 crashes resulting in 28 deaths. This marks a staggering increase of 78.6 percent in fatal crashes and 86.7 percent in fatalities compared to the same period last year. Authorities have clarified that one crash was mistakenly counted multiple times due to its involvement with multiple fatalities.
