The city of Bloomington is steadily advancing its public spaces and community amenities, with significant projects underway since the approval of a new half-percent sales tax back in the 2023 election. As reported by City of Bloomington official website, this tax increase is set to fund improvements to the Nine Mile Creek corridor, Moir and Central parks, the construction of a new community health and wellness center, and renovations to the Bloomington Ice Garden (BIG).
Despite the breadth of construction, there’s a concerted effort to minimize disruption at these facilities. The BIG renovation, which kicked off in November, will— according to the city's memo — not interfere with the ice garden's regular operations until mid-March 2025. Post-upgrade, visitors can expect an NHL-size rink, better ticketing, and enhanced security, as well as upgrades to locker rooms and other amenities.
In terms of green space enhancements, the Nine Mile Creek corridor is receiving special attention for sustainability. The project earned a Regional Leaders and Innovators Award from the Minneapolis Regional Chamber, recognizing the efforts for the preservation of Nine Mile Creek and surrounding prairie areas. Details of the project can be viewed at the project's website, highlighting the community engagement and the planned improvements awaiting residents.
The upcoming community health and wellness center is another focus, with HGA Architects and City staff working to finely draft the design. Public input is actively encouraged, with an invitation extended for residents to review and comment on the plans on February 8 at the Indoor Market at Civic Plaza. The center aims to be a new cornerstone for community health resources and services.
Overall, these steps affirm the city’s commitment to not just maintain, but to dynamically enhance the Bloomington landscape and infrastructure. The mayor's office and city planners keep the residents informed and involved, ensuring that these projects, funded by taxpayers, reflect the interests and the wellbeing of the community they’re designed to serve.
