As the winter chill settles over Boulder, the Parks and Recreation Department is ensuring that lower temperatures don't equate to lower activity levels for the local youth. In a public release from Boulder Parks and Recreation (BPR), as obtained by the City of Boulder, a variety of indoor activities and offerings at the community's recreation centers are being highlighted as remedies to the cold-weather blues that often keep kids sedentary.
Beyond a snowscape, BPR is providing spaces like the community lounge and ninja studio at South Boulder Recreation Center where kids can play games, ride stationary bikes, and practice their coordination skills with parkour, these amenities alongside the gymnastics center at North Boulder Recreation Center, which not only offer classes and drop-in times but also host birthday parties, adding an element of celebration to physical fitness. For those with a competitive streak or a penchant for team sports, the rec centers boast facilities for racquetball, basketball, indoor tennis, and even dance.
When looking beyond the structured environments, the department points out that Boulder's 80 parks and public spaces don't hibernate during the winter as they become grounds for sledding, snow fort building, and scavenger hunts. Further nurturing the social aspect of play, BPR has "day off" camps at the North Center, which are designed to foster friendships through interactive games, crafts, and swimming.
Amid these wintry delights, an upcoming "Sweetheart Dance" on February 8, 2025, has been announced, an event where, according to the BPR release, kids can dance, do crafts, play in the gymnastics area and have fun with their adults, capturing the essence of community engagement. And as the new year rolls in with promises and resolutions, BPR is not just selling memberships and training packages, but ensuring that everyone finds a spot, a place to move and play, they're also hosting a New Year's event at East Boulder Community Center on January 11, 2025. A comprehensive experience with sample classes, a wellness fair, and an introduction to services aimed at supporting overall health and fitness is on the agenda.
