On the evening of Friday, the quiet of Bourne, Massachusetts, was disrupted when police officers were called to a residence on Old Plymouth Rd. According to the Bourne Police Department's social Facebook post, they were responding to a report of a man in mental health distress, who was also said to be in possession of a firearm while family members, including a young child, were present.
Officers arrived at the scene shortly after the call at approximately 7:32 PM. They successfully managed to safely escort the family out of the situation. The male, however, stayed behind in the home with the firearm. An urgent response was called for, leading to the arrival of the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Special Weapons and Tactics Team who tried to speak with the man and, after around two hours, convinced him to safely exit the residence.
"After approximately 2 hours, the male exited the residence and was peacefully taken into custody," reported the Bourne Police Department's Facebook post. What became a volatile scenario was diffused without injury. The man was taken to an area hospital for evaluation following his surrender. At the scene, authorities found two firearms with ammunition near where the 47-year-old had been positioned.
The man, whose identity has not been released, is now facing forthcoming charges for various criminal offenses, including unlawful possession of a firearm. In their statement, the Bourne Police Department extended gratitude to the SWAT team, Bourne Fire/Rescue and Emergency Services, and the public for their roles in bringing the situation to a non-violent end.
