Tragedy struck Brazoria County on Saturday as a fierce tornado claimed one life and left four others injured. The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office confirmed the tornado touchdown between Liverpool and Hillcrest Village, leading to extensive damage, including ten destroyed homes. According to Click2Houston, the storms that swept through the Houston area brought a series of severe weather phenomena, and at least five tornadoes were rated from EF-0 to EF-1 by the National Weather Service last Thursday.
Mayor Dan Davis of Brazoria County, in a statement issued to the public, revealed the critical developments following the powerful tornadoes, detailing the storm's impact and the subsequent actions taken by local authorities. While supporting their families, a homeowner, Anna Peterson, shared harrowing details with KHOU 11, revealing how her fifth-wheel trailer was hurled to an adjacent property amid the chaos. She recounted to KHOU 11, "I heard the back door flew open and I told my husband, 'Run' and we hid in the closet with our puppies. About two or three minutes later, it was over and then we opened the front door to see and it was all gone."
Further compounding the situation, a local daycare center and Wald Disney Elementary School on Mustang Road near Alvin also suffered damage, with power lines downed in at least eight locations. Manvel Mayor Dan Davis spoke to KHOU 11 stating, "one adult was killed in the county and four others were injured," with the injuries thankfully not life-threatening.
Amid the wreckage and recovery efforts, the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office indicated that the damage was concentrated mostly from the north end of County Road 191 in the Liverpool area down to Highway 35 to the Hillcrest Village area near Alvin. "Though there were multiple touchdown points, they were relatively small in geographical area," Madison Polston of the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office told KHOU 11. Continuing the aftermath efforts, crews pledged to persist through the damaged areas, as Polston affirmed, "So the secondary searches are really to confirm that everyone is accounted for."
