More than two years following a devastating shooting in Butler Township, Ohio, the man accused of the crime, Stephen Marlow, has been declared incompetent to stand trial for the murders of four of his neighbors. According to WLWT, medical experts determined after months of treatment and evaluation that Marlow's competency is unlikely to be restored.
In the wake of this decision, Montgomery County prosecutors are seeking legal pathways to preserve an opportunity for a trial should Marlow's condition change. The four victims, as reported by WLWT, were 82-year-old Clyde Knox, his 78-year-old wife Eva Knox, and 42-year-old Sarah Anderson, along with her 15-year-old daughter, Kayla Anderson. Marlow faces multiple charges, including eight counts of murder and four counts of burglary.
Despite his diagnosis, the legal proceedings have not concluded. During a recent hearing, Dayton Daily News reported that Judge Dennis Adkins ruled Marlow incompetent to stand trial. Under the current legal framework, he cannot be restored to competency within one year.
As the deadline for Marlow’s potential restoration to competency nears, prosecutors push the court to maintain jurisdiction over the suspect. This effort is underscored by chilling video evidence presented in court, as detailed by WHIO, which shows events leading up to the killings. In the heartrending aftermath detailed in a statement by Sarah's father, Kelly Brockman, the family is facing a "life sentence, of traumatic grief" due to this tragic event.
