Following a jury trial, 23-year-old Camren Watts has been convicted on multiple charges, including assault with a semiautomatic firearm, shooting into an occupied vehicle, unlawful firearm activity, and carrying a loaded firearm in public. The incident, resulting in a man being seriously injured, occurred on September 2, 2020, in Oakland.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Royl Roberts shared the outcome of the trial, in which Watts was found to have opened fire on a parked car at the junction of 51st Street and West Street, striking one of two men who were asleep inside. The jury's deliberation accounted for Watts's previous juvenile convictions and the aggravating factors of violence or bodily harm associated with the case. According to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, the victim sustained multiple injuries in the shooting while the other occupant was unscathed.
The gravity of Watts's actions weighed heavily in court, as evidenced by the guilty verdict. The prosecution did not hesitate to highlight the impact of gun violence on the community. "I first want to thank the jury for their service and careful deliberation in this trial," Royl Roberts said, as per the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. He also expressed gratitude towards the Prosecution Team and the Inspector assigned to the case for their efforts in securing conviction.
Camren Watts now faces a 23-year sentence in state prison, with the sentencing set for February 3, 2025, at the René C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland.
