The small city of Castroville has just been designated a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas, as announced by Governor Greg Abbott. This acknowledgment comes as a result of the city's dedication to developing tourism as a fundamental element of its economic strategy. This new certification is geared towards boosting job creation and attracting visitors to explore the heritage and hospitality that the community has to offer.
"Castroville's recognition as a Tourism Friendly Texas Community is a testament to its cultural legacy and enduring hospitality,” Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell told the Office of the Texas Governor. In his announcement, Governor Abbott also emphasized the role tourism plays in supporting various jobs statewide. Travelers contributed over $193.8 billion to the state's economy in 2023, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas.
The celebration of Castroville's rich Alsatian heritage is a key part of its charm. The city’s Mayor Darrin Schroeder spoke of it with pride, noting Castroville's identity as the 'Little Alsace of Texas.' Mayor Schroeder told the publication, "From St. Louis Day, celebrated annually since 1847, to festivals like the Old-Fashioned Christmas and Alsatian Festival, visitors enjoy rich traditions of food, song, dance, and history." These unique cultural experiences are seen as a magnet for tourism and a boon for economic growth, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.
Senator Pete Flores applauded the efforts of the community's residents, leaders, and businesses that led to the award. Describing Castroville as a 'gem' in Texas, Flores predicted that the certification would bring even more attention to the region. Meanwhile, Castroville’s Tourism and Business Development Director Darin Hamm expressed his pride in the city's achievements and the collaborative work behind the scenes. The program from which Castroville benefitted is open to local governments, or non-profit organizations that serve as lead entities for tourism promotion and development efforts, and provides communities with opportunities to partner with Travel Texas.
As it stands, Castroville is set on a path of growth, inviting tourists to immerse themselves in a blend of historical and contemporary Texas life. Travel Texas, under the Governor's Economic Development & Tourism Office, remains committed to marketing the Lone Star State as an exciting travel destination and supporting communities like Castroville in their endeavor to flourish through tourism.
