A tragic incident occurred yesterday when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) helicopter crashed in San Diego County, resulting in the death of the pilot. The crash site, located near Potrero, close to the U.S.-Mexico border, was scattered with the remains of a Eurocopter AS350 B3, an aircraft used in border security missions. According to NBC News, the CBP Air and Marine Operations helicopter was on a mission when it met its fate around 10 a.m. north of state Route 94, two miles south of Barrett Lake.
The tragedy has deeply affected the CBP community, with dozens of border patrol agents paying their respects along the procession route later that day. The pilot, an Air Interdiction Agent, was the only occupant of the aircraft during the crash. Details about the incident came from a spokesperson for the CBP, emphasizing that the downed helicopter belonged to Air and Marine Operations, a separate agency component. While the immediate circumstances leading up to the crash remained unclear, Robert Katz, a seasoned commercial pilot, suggested to NBC 7 that flight data indicated irregular flying patterns without hinting at any mechanical malfunctions.
Based on Katz's statement, flying conditions at the time were reported to be clear, and the helicopter was flying low to the ground. The helicopter was sourced from a company known as Granite Coast Mapping, located in Coronado. However, not much information about the company is documented at this time. The crash has caused grief, curiosity, and concern regarding the safety of CBP's critical missions conducted by the Air and Marine Operations.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken charge of the investigation, as per their social media post about the incident. "NTSB investigating Monday's crash of an American Eurocopter AS350-B3 helicopter near Potrero, California," the agency posted on NTSB's Newsroom. Additional details are expected to surface as the investigation progresses, and hopefully, lead to increased measures for flight operation safety, particularly those that skirt the borders of our nation – where vigilance, balanced with the well-being of the vigilant, is of paramount concern.
