As the holiday season reaches its peak, the Chandler Police Department is cautioning shoppers to stay alert due to an increase in a particular crime trend known as "jugging." According to AZCentral, the term "jugging" refers to perpetrators following victims from a bank or retail outlet with the intention to rob them. This warning comes amidst reports of a significant rise in such crime over recent months in the area.
While Chandler authorities have stressed that this is not necessarily an uptick in local crime, but rather a call for increased vigilance, they acknowledge a nationwide rise in jugging incidents. Sgt. Ricky Gonzales of Chandler PD shared in an interview with FOX 10 Phoenix, "There's been an uptick nationwide, but for Chandler, not so much an uptick. This is more of a proactive 'let's get the word out to the community.'" Victims are often unaware of being followed until they arrive at their next destination, where criminals may then forcibly enter their vehicles to steal valuables.
Detective Eva Zermeno of Chandler's media relations unit outlined preventive measures for individuals to consider during the holiday shopping rush. These steps include being aware of one's surroundings, watching for followers, securing valuables, and employing the Buddy System. Zermeno emphasized the importance of these precautions in a statement obtained by AZCentral, urging shoppers to "be aware of your surroundings" and "If you feel unsafe, we urge you to call 911 immediately."
In addition to the guidance provided by Detective Zermeno, Sgt. Gonzales reminded shoppers via FOX 10 Phoenix to minimize risks, advising, "If you cannot avoid it, especially during the shopping season, try not to leave high-dollar items, cash or firearms inside your vehicle." He further noted that in the event of noticing someone suspicious or potentially following you after a shopping trip, the best course of action is to immediately contact law enforcement authorities.
