According to the Charlotte Fire Department's news release, this benevolent act, now in its third year, has become a beloved tradition.
Despite being dressed as holiday characters, the descent was no sleight of hand. Behind the spectacle, it was the Charlotte Fire Department's Special Operations Team who, with their technical rescue skills, ensured a safe visit to nearly all the hospital's windows. Smiling, waving and capturing the memories on their phones, children, families, and staff members greeted the whimsical rappellers. Captain Jason Hardin, orchestrating the event, laughing shared that the Grinch's popularity was unexpected, "The Grinch was kind of a fluke the first year. Someone brought it last minute, and it stole the show. Now, it’s become a staple. The kids love him, even more than Santa sometimes," he explained.
Months of meticulous planning precedes this event as the team coordinates with the hospital to secure a festive and safe experience. The initiative, led by Captain Hardin, originated from a simple conversation at the firehouse and has since evolved into a signature holiday event. "It’s become one of the most anticipated events of the year," Hardin told Charlotte Fire Department's news team.

Hardin summed up the event's impact: "Being in the hospital is hard enough. But being here during the holidays? It's tough for these kids and their families.
