Charlotte's own firefighters are stepping up their game when it comes to urban search and rescue, with the Charlotte Fire Department recently hosting a rigorous Structural Collapse Technician Course. The hands-on training event, conducted at the Charlotte Fire's Training Academy, saw participants from across North Carolina come together to sharpen their skills in responding to disaster scenarios that involve structural collapse, underlining the city's commitment to public safety and its capacity as a hub of expertise.
Initiated in the aftermath of the tragic 9/11 events, the program was borne out of the need for a highly-skilled, quick-response USAR capability in Charlotte and beyond, with the city's first responders acknowledging the importance of being prepared for large-scale calamities similar to those faced on that fateful day, the course has grown to cover a state-wide mandate, meanwhile serving as a reminder of the ongoing threats that emergency personnel must be equipped to handle.
According to a statement obtained by the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Fire Captain Bradley Fulk recounted the significance of this continued training, "This program started after 9/11, with significant funding and support from our command staff, the mayor, and city council to ensure we were prepared for large-scale events like those seen that day." Fulk went on to note the progressive nature of the training, as it serves to benefit not only Charlotte's bravest but also those from neighboring jurisdictions.
