The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert for residents in the historically rooted Douglas neighborhood after a series of robberies were reported within the vicinity, all taking place in a week. According to the official CPD release, individuals have been accosted by two armed assailants emerging from a white sedan, with the attacks characterized by a mix of brute force and the display of a knife.
Victims encountered their attackers while navigating the public ways, specifically on the 3200 and 3100 blocks of South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., as well as the 3200 block of South Michigan Ave., where the first incident, involving a male victim occurred on November 9 at 6:50 P.M., and since several more, as reported by the CPD. The most recent being on November 15 at 7:00 P.M. the thieves taking belongings by force, both striking their targets and—in at least one instance—brandishing a knife to induce compliance before retreating in their vehicle.
The suspects in question have been described as two African-American males, both donning black hooded sweatshirts and ski masks to obscure their identities, as detailed by the CPD. In response to these incidents, the CPD has advised citizens to stay vigilant, report any questionable activities, and recall any distinctive features of potential assailants. Moreover, to prioritize safety by not engaging in pursuit and by maintaining composure when facing such a threat.
Residents and visitors of the Douglas community are encouraged to adopt an acute awareness of their environs. If confronted, they are to remain calm and observant, remembering that personal safety supersedes all and that when faced with such adversity, the most effective action is to capture details, to provide them to the police, and not to follow the suspect but to call 9-1-1 and await authorities on the scene if safely possible, as per the CPD.
