A somber Christmas morning unfolded in Mission Valley as firefighters engaged a blaze at the long-abandoned In Cahoots Dance Hall & Saloon, once a popular country bar. Fire officials confirmed the incident at 5373 Mission Center Road and drew crews to the scene shortly before 10 a.m. NBC 7 San Diego reported billowing black smoke was visible from nearby roads, and two major freeways, Interstate 8 and Interstate 15, as onlookers could witness the flames consuming what remained of the structure.
Approximately 50 firefighters tackled the Christmas Day fire, with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirming that the building, which had been shuttered since 2018, was further compromised due to a prior incident in late October, such that the firefighting strategy involved allowing the flame-engulfed structure to burn while focusing efforts on defending the adjacent buildings, a strategy that evolved out of necessity after the previous blaze weakened the already fragile structure according to FOX 5 San Diego.
Battalion Chief Craig Newell elucidated the scope of the damage from the prior fire, which limited internal access and compelled crews to concentrate on external containment. "We didn't go inside because the structure was limited and compromised from the fire before," Newell disclosed in a statement obtained by NBC 7. Determining the fire's origin and cause is a complex undertaking, he added, alluding to the complications engendered by the consecutive combustions.
Local resident Rachel Elandt, who happened upon the conflagration while en route to family holiday festivities, reflected on the incident's timing and its impact amidst a time of gratitude, "It does make us reflect on all that we do have on Christmas morning," Elandt told NBC 7, acknowledging the inherent blessing of safety and well-being during a time when such calamitous events tremble the heart, "We do appreciate the fact that we are safe. I'm glad everyone is safe, too, it looks like."
