The City of Davis, alongside its Police Department, has clarified its stance on immigration enforcement and the protection of individual human rights. A joint message from the Mayor of Davis and the Davis Police Chief emphasized the department’s commitment to serving the community without bias toward immigration status.
Addressing the unease that has taken root in locals' minds, authorities stressed the department's dedication to fair enforcement of the law. "The Davis Police Department will not inquire about an individual's immigration status for immigration enforcement purposes," officials affirmed, as stated on the City of Davis website. Their mission remains to 'Serve with Pride, Enforce the Law and Guard Individual Human Rights,' which extends to all members of the Davis community.
Aligned with the California Values Act, or SB 54, the local law enforcement is barred from using resources for immigration enforcement, unless it pertains to serious crimes with judicial warrants. According to the official statement, the Davis Police Department stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the community, maintaining high professional standards and focusing on procedural justice.
Further strengthening ties with community initiatives, the city’s status as a Sanctuary City was underscored, reflecting a longstanding commitment to compassionate governance. "The City has and continues to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our residents from hate and persecution based on race, class, gender, ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation or immigration status," the official message added. Lastly, the recent 'Hate-Free Together' initiative fosters a restorative approach to community development, evidencing Davis's pledge to inclusivity and safety for all its residents.
