In a troubling incident of child exploitation, Columbus authorities have reported the arrest of a man accused of coercing a minor through social media. The Columbus Division of Police and Franklin County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force took Mr. Herdman into custody on December 19, as per a recent release by the Columbus Division of Police.
Herdman, apprehended by the Columbus SWAT at his residence, is alleged to have initially solicited nude images from a 14-year-old, offering payment and confidentiality, only to extort and threaten the victim with public exposure subsequently. Meeting the minor on social media, he had orchestrated a scheme that rapidly descended into blackmail and coercion, demanding the production of additional explicit content.
The situation escalated when Herdman threatened to post the images online to "ruin" the minor’s life if they didn't comply with his demands, which included meeting him for sex in exchange for the deletion of the images. His arrest was the result of a planned encounter with the victim at a park where police, having been alerted by the minor, were waiting.
According to the official statement, the investigation unearthed the coercive communication and child sexual assault materials that Herdman distributed. The victim is currently reported to be safe with family and has been provided access to necessary support resources.
