In a display of quick action and community heroism, neighbors in El Dorado Hills came to the aid of a 78-year-old woman trapped in her burning home yesterday morning. Jennafer Phillips, a resident of the house, recounted how the situation quickly escalated when flames engulfed their home, and her mother, unable to descend the stairs due to mobility issues, was left stranded on the second level, as reported by KCRA.
The rescue was a collective effort as Phillips and her boyfriend, Jesse Sanchez, attempted to reach the trapped woman. Their initial efforts were thwarted by intense heat and smoke, so they resorted to pitching ladders against the dwelling. Sanchez climbed the garage to reach the window where Phillips’ mother was frozen in fear. He managed to coax her and eventually help her out of the window, as Phillips told KCRA.
Not far behind, off-duty El Dorado Hills Fire Captain Adam Tiffany and another off-duty CAL FIRE firefighter Gary Culmer provided critical assistance. "I went to the backyard, grabbed my A-frame ladder, came back around, threw up the ladder, got it pretty close to the house. And then Gary and Jessie and I helped her get down," Tiffany described in a statement obtained by KCRA. Their pivotal roles in securing the elderly woman's safety were also highlighted by FOX40, noting the importance of their quick response and the subsequent assistance they provided to the on-duty firefighters who managed to quell the flames, preventing further damage to the home.
The fire caused extensive damage estimated at approximately $450,000 to the property and an additional $100,000 to its contents. According to KCRA, the family has since set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to rebuild their lives post-calamity, demonstrating a community’s spirit to rally and support those hit by tragedy, and while investigators continue to probe into the fire's cause, one person was also reported to have been hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
