A tragic incident occurred this past weekend on Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose, where a 6-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle, as confirmed by the California Highway Patrol. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's office has since identified the child as King Holguin. According to a KTVU report, the incident occurred just before 11 p.m. last Friday when King ran onto the highway for reasons still being determined by officials.
King's distraught mother, although unable to face the camera, shared with KTVU that her son was autistic and non-verbal, he did not grasp the dangers of traffic, and despite child safety locks at home, he found a way outside. She believes he probably wished to play in the rain on that fateful night. The California Highway Patrol has disclosed that the boy was hit in the No. 3 lane of I-280 by a San Jose man driving a 2024 Nissan Altima; the driver, who remained on the scene, is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to CHP Capt. Justin Bradford.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that after being struck, King was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The crash prompted the temporary closure of the involved portion of I-280 as officials worked at the scene.
