In a decisive move to clear the air, the Dallas City Council has voted in favor of a new ordinance that will see vaping included under existing smoke-free regulations. The measure, set to kick in on December 11, 2025, expands the smoke-free zones to also forbid the use of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices where traditional smoking has already been banned.
While the enactment date gives residents and businesses a one-year grace period to align with the new policy, the ordinance requires no additional burden, as it does not introduce new restricted areas but rather updates the banned activities within them. According to Dallas City's bulletin, businesses operational in sectors such as hospitality and fitness will need to adjust signage to reflect the updated restrictions.
Council Member Kathy Stewart expressed pride in collaborating with the Environmental Commission to address a 'serious public health matter,' indicating the council's awareness of vaping's impact on youth and vulnerable groups. "I am pleased about today's vote to enact these amendments," Stewart told Dallas City's bulletin.
The ordinance shores up Dallas's Comprehensive Environmental and Climate Action Plan, suggesting a stride forward in public health initiatives. Interim City Manager Kimberly Tolbert remarked on the significance of the ordinance in closing a 'regulatory gap' and safeguarding community health from the adverse effects of electronic smoking devices.
