A man has died following a high-speed pursuit in Dallas that included a vehicle with a stolen license plate, shots fired at police officers, and a crash, local authorities confirmed.

According to FOX 4 News, the sequence of events began just before 1 p.m. last Friday in the 2900 block of West Camp Wisdom Road when Dallas police noticed the vehicle in question. An attempt to perform a traffic stop was made after which the driver backed into a patrol vehicle and subsequently tried to quickly drive away. A police helicopter proceeded to shadow the vehicle when officers didn't immediately start a car chase on the ground.

As reported by CBS News, interim Dallas Police Chief Michel Igo detailed that while the police helicopter was monitoring the situation, the suspect "intentionally crashed into another vehicle" and began shooting at the pursuing officers, striking and grazing the side of one of the police units before crashing at the intersection of Second Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue.

After the chase came to an end, police said a passenger in the vehicle exited and was swiftly apprehended. Meanwhile, the commotion culminated with the driver remaining inside the car, sustaining injuries. In what was later determined to be an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," the Dallas Police confirmed last Friday night that the driver had died. It was clarified that no officers were injured during the incident and that no officers had to discharge their weapons, as per CBS News.

The identity of both the passenger detained by police and the deceased driver were not released at the time. As the investigation continues, more information is expected to be made available by the Dallas Police Department.
