DeKalb County has announced it will open its warming centers from today through Saturday, starting at 8 p.m. each evening. The four designated locations include Frontline Response International on Gresham Road in Atlanta, the North DeKalb Senior/Community Center in Chamblee, Mason Mill Recreation Center, and Exchange Recreation Center on Columbia Drive, according to a recent release on the county's official website.
In response to the cold weather residents faced with limited shelter options can find respite at these warming centers where Frontline Response International will function as a central hub providing essential services, including hot meals, beds, and case management; the other centers are largely there to facilitate transportation to Frontline for those services. In a logistic effort to ensure community members can access Frontline, DeKalb County has established pickup schedules from various locations such as Chamblee Library, North DeKalb Senior/Community Center, and Mason Mill Recreation Center among others, which are detailed on the county's website.
Notably, while DeKalb fire stations have historically been used as warming center venues, this will not be the case currently; however, Avondale Fire Station No. 3 is set to serve as a transportation point to the centralized Frontline location. The targeted aid by Frontline Response International during such extreme conditions is part of a contracted service with DeKalb County, emphasizing the proactive measures the county is taking to safeguard its vulnerable populations against the harsh cold.
