Detroit residents, most city offices will be closed from Dec. 24, to Jan. 2, 2025, for the holidays. Essential services like police, fire, and bus operations will continue as usual. However, there will be no trash, recycling, or bulk item collection on Christmas and New Year's Day. If your pickup day is usually Friday, it will be moved to Saturday during this time, according to the City of Detroit.
Parking in Detroit will be free from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1 (except in Residential Parking Zones). The Ford Underground Garage and Eastern Market Garage will be closed on some days. The Detroit Health Department will be closed from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, but some WIC clinics will offer remote services on Dec. 26, 27, and 30. The Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine and CAM Access Points will be closed on Dec. 24, 25, 31, and Jan. 1, reopening on Jan. 6. Detroit Department of Transportation buses will run on a Sunday schedule for Christmas and New Year's Day, as stated by the City of Detroit.
The Water and Sewerage Department will handle emergencies during the holidays, but customer service will be unavailable on Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Bill payments can still be made through remote options like the automated phone system, kiosks, or online. While city offices are closed, many services, including tax payments and permit applications, can be completed online via the city website, DivDat kiosks, or the mobile app. For a full list of holiday closures and service changes, check City of Detroit's official news post.
