A significant blaze broke out at a vacant building in Downtown Los Angeles today, with the Los Angeles Fire Department responding to a well-developed fire on the fourth floor of a four-story structure located at 1246 S Hope St. According to the initial LAFD alert, firefighters were compelled to take a defensive stance as the flames engulfed the pre-33 edifice. With additional resources summoned to the scene, the operation quickly escalated in magnitude.
The incident, which was first reported at 10:58 AM, had greatly intensified by 11:23 AM, prompting the LAFD to categorize it as a Major Emergency. By this time, the fire response had swelled to include 17 fire companies. Firefighters needed to quickly deploy master streams and set up ladder pipes and wagon batteries to combat the expanding fire decisively. As they worked to contain the flames, crews also placed ground ladders to help unhoused individuals exit the building, as reported by the LAFD.
The concerted effort of over 100 firefighters culminated in a knockdown of the fire by 12:35 PM, after battling the blaze for one hour and 37 minutes. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the ordeal, as per the LAFD knockdown announcement. However, the aftermath of the event will entail an extended duration overhaul operation, as firefighters and investigation teams remain on-site to ensure the scene is safe and to determine the cause of the fire. Motorists in Downtown Los Angeles were advised to continue avoiding the area around Hope and Pico during this period.
