Downtown Pittsburgh was hit by a substantial water main break last night, leading to the shutdown of several roads around Point State Park. According to WPXI, the break occurred at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Commonwealth Place, a critical juncture near the park's scenic confluence of rivers.
Initial reports from CBS Pittsburgh indicated that streets, including Commonwealth Place, Penn, and Liberty, were closed to facilitate repairs. However, all roads except a section of Commonwealth Place where the break happened have since been reopened. In the post-incident cleanup, roads were cleared, swept, and salted before reopening to Pittsburgh's denizens around 11:30 p.m.
Crews from Pittsburgh Water were dispatched to the scene and addressed the situation soon after the reported break. There has been no immediate word on what caused the pipe to rupture, allowing the water to surge and challenge the city's substructure.
