Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has appointed Dr. Jody Barrow as the new Executive Secretary of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC).  Barrow, who brings with him over four decades of experience in public education in Georgia, will be succeeding Matt Arthur, who is retiring after a four-year tenure as announced in a recent press release.

The Governor expressed his confidence in Barrow's capabilities, stating, "Under Jody's leadership, I know we'll preserve the high standards and qualities of Georgia's educators as they prepare our students for the world and opportunities outside the classroom," according to a statement Kemp made. Brian Sirmans, GaPSC Chair and Assistant Principal at Lanier County Public Schools, echoed this sentiment, highlighting "His extensive experience and unwavering commitment to advancing education in Georgia will undoubtedly be an asset to our team and this great state that we serve," as noted by the state's official announcement.

Former Executive Secretary Matt Arthur expressed his support for Barrow's appointment, emphasizing his experience and collaborative abilities. "Governor Kemp made a wonderful recommendation of who should lead this agency. Dr. Barrow’s extensive experience, his vast knowledge about the education profession, and his ability to effectively collaborate with others will serve the agency and Georgia education well," Arthur stated, in a statement obtained by the state's official website.

Dr. Barrow, upon accepting his nomination and the high responsibility it carries forth, conveyed his gratitude and eagerness to step into this significant role, "I am honored and humbled by the support of Governor Kemp and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Matt Arthur has done an exceptional job as the Executive Secretary of the GaPSC, and I wish him much success in his retirement. The role of the Commission is critical to the growth and development of our state’s classroom teachers, auxiliary staff, and leadership personnel. With a talented staff and quality board in place, we look forward to enhancing Georgia’s educational opportunities for our children and professionals." Dr. Barrow shared, according to the same press release.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Barrow held roles including superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools and is currently Deputy Director of the Georgia School Superintendents Association. His career achievements have garnered numerous accolades, such as the GAEL Outstanding Educator and the Bill Barr Leadership Award. His leadership and efforts in education have also been recognized by both the Georgia Senate and House.
